Glucosamine Chondroitin is one of the most popular and widely used food supplement for the management of osteoarthritis, especially in the knee. Chondroitin is combined with sulphur to make a chondroitin sulphate which is the compound most commonly found in food supplements. There is still a lot of research which needs to be undertaken to provide clear clinical evidence that it is effective. However, some research has indicated that taking chondroitin sulphate for osteoarthritis can help with some pain relief in people. It can take up to 3 months for the signs of some relief to show. The New England Journal of Medicine 2006, published results from a comprehensive long term study for the use of the supplement for patients with knee osteoarthritis. In this particular study chondroitin sulphate was combined with glucosamine. Some relief was shown in patients who experienced moderate to severe knee pain. The important point outlined in this study was that the brand of the combination of chondroitin sulphate with the glucosamine might make the difference in the level of pain relief which takes place.
